Five years ago, after I graduated from residency. I am passionate about the fact that everybody deserves good medical care. I like working in cities because you have a lot of diversity and and different income classes. The patients that I'm treating in the ER are from all over the world and have all different medical conditions. It's interesting for me as a physician and it allows me to hopefully give great care. And Miami reminded me of New York, as a coastal city with a foothold in Latin America.

I'm Vice President of Finance for a local real estate development company, called The Related Group. We build mostly residential housing throughout the Southeast and newly Southwest. We're probably best known for luxury condominiums. And, we're doing a fair amount in the affordable housing space. My job is mostly transnational in nature, capital fundraising, dealing with our equity partners and lenders, and negotiating agreements.

Monday through Friday, I work at AMA medical school. It's a small, private EMT paramedic school where students can complete it faster than the usual program at Miami Dade. And, you get more hands on work. I personally like it because my whole family's really into  firefighting and the EMT business. It puts my hands into it and I like it.

What keeps you busy during the week?
Keeping up with my kids and their different activities. In my former life, I was a public defender at the Dade County Public Defender's office. I stopped practicing law when we had our children. When they were younger, I was super active at their schools, as a room parent and as President of the Parent's Association. As they've gotten older, I do all sorts of different things behind the scenes and just kind of keeping our family going.

I'm a water guy. And, growing up in Miami, I love being outdoors. I enjoyed sailing, surfing, diving, fishing, and messing around the Bay. Eventually, I went to graduate school in New Hampshire. I knew I wanted to teach and share my passion for the outdoors and I studied environmental education. As a student, I was never my best in the classroom. I was always a better student in nontraditional spaces. I was always very passionate and curious about learning, but the traditional schooling environment never inspired me. Fast forward many years, I'm still in education but mostly in my own way. As my journey continues, it's interesting for me to look back and see those parallels.

I'm in local publishing. My most recent project is as the associate publisher of the Coral Gables magazine. We're a journalistic magazine that's on par with the city. We're coming up on our second anniversary in April. It's been a whole bunch of fun. We're a small team, six of us, just cranking it out every day. J.P. Faber is the editor and Richard Roffman is the publisher. They have published a lot of things together, including Miami Magazine in the 80's. They saw what I saw in Coral Gables. I was looking to start something, and then they came in, and it was even better. It's been super fun. The reception from the community and the kind of communication that we're having is exhilarating.
