When I was 22, I noticed that I didn’t feel good. I was tired, lethargic and sure I wasn’t supposed to feel this way. One night around 2 am, I was watching a health food documentary on Netflix and had one of those stoner-eureka moments. The next day, I bought a juicer and went to Whole Foods and bought $500 dollars of produce and did a 15-day juice fast. I noticed instantly that I had a lot more energy, was losing weight, my testosterone was through the roof – I felt on top of the world. After the fast, I looked for a transition back to food and that’s where I learned of alternative diets.

Oh, wow. I became a fireman when I was 24 years old, so the list is really long. Mostly, I've learned how to deal with people and different personalities. You're living with seven other people, every third day. Whether you like it or not, they become your family. Guys on the fire department are super interesting. They're from all walks of life. Some guys are really good financially, some guys are really good with building. I met a girl the other day who worked at Dunkin Donuts before the fire department. There's just such a large spectrum of personalities and backgrounds that you learn a lot.

A lot. Really, just to help people. When I was 14, we were walking down the beach one day and there was a mass of people going crazy. There was a blue baby on the sand. I'm just like in shock. My dad casually tells everybody to move away. He grabs the baby. He does CPR like he taught me how to do it. With a really small infant, you can't really use your hands. You use your fingers. He just had his two index finger fingers and hit the little baby's chest a couple of times and blew in his mouth and the baby survived. And, then he just continued walking down the beach like it was nothing. I was like wow. Something so simple can save a life.

Years ago, I was signed to a label. It did not work out and usually when that happens to an artist, it breaks your morale, it breaks you down. It took me longer than I thought to get back on my feet. Last year I began working on my new show and getting ready to go back to Ultra. I had played at Ultra from 1999 to 2009. The event has blown up all over the world and I felt it was a great platform to make a comeback. I took the opportunity this year to reinvent myself and I’m not stopping. So far, this year I’ve played Ultra in Miami and Korea. We are in negotiations for more festivals this year.

Right now, I am training a service dog for my daughter. He's a four month old puppy. My daughter has a condition called complex regional pain syndrome. I've trained dogs in the past but not as a service dog. There's a lot of learning on my end going into it and he's super smart and bringing a lot of joy to our family.

I like to coach my son's baseball team. I'm assistant coach. We're practicing on the same field where I used to play which is crazy to think about. The thing I miss most about baseball, is not playing the game, it's the camaraderie. It's hard to explain to a seven-year-old, but I just want him to have fun and make those friendships too.

It's basically just seeds that we're grinding up. The Wheat Berry is a little kernel of wheat and when you grind it up, there are three parts. There's the germ, which is the fatty part. It's very nutrient dense; there's a wheat germ oil. There's the bran, which is the outer coating, also very nutrient dense and has a lot of vitamins and most of the fiber. And then the endosperm is the starch, like a pure white flour. When you eat white flour, you're only getting one part and you're missing out on the other nutrients. But, when you are fresh milling, you're getting all three parts in the flour, so you get the full nutrients.

To make the sauce, I use a VitaMix blender. I soak the cashews overnight in water, the next day I add two teaspoons of garlic powder, 1.5 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar, 3 tablespoons of nutritional yeast, and a little less than a half cup of water with 1.5 teaspoons of Himalayan salt and black pepper. I squeeze a whole lemon and mix it until it’s creamy. You can add more nutritional yeast to make it cheesier. It’s a great replacement for an Alfredo sauce. I’ll use it for the whole week.

I would say the easiest way to picture it is you're learning from a holistic standpoint where you're not just using your mind but using your heart and your body as well. Learning in ways that use movement or use songs or a lot of artwork. Instead of using a textbook, we'll make our own textbook, we'll draw the pictures. It's very, hands-on. And, we're very connected with nature.

We were living in Chicago, my wife and I were dating at the time and I started something in early 2007, called Generation Obama to encourage 20, 30 and 40 year-olds to get involved in the campaign. Following the election, I joined the administration and we moved to Washington. That's where we had our kids, Lila and Grant.
