The Lotus House -  it’s a women’s shelter here in Miami – one step at a time, they have built an oasis for women who have been through a lot. Their facility in Overtown is special; I don’t think there’s anything else like it. Before Christmas this year, we took all our employees over and helped them move in and get set up.  It is an important part of our community.

Guitars over Guns, they're here in Miami and they're also in Chicago and a couple other cities. It's a music based activity for underserved communities. It's a way to get young people involved in music rather than then guns. We've been able to sponsor a couple of events at the university that they've been involved with with our music fraternity. The Donna Shalala Music Reach is another organization that sends out University of Miami students to give music lessons to students throughout South Florida that wouldn't have the opportunity to experience music lessons.

Our families have been affected by cancer. This year we joined the Dolphins Cancer Challenge and did the fun run around the stadium to raise money and awareness for cancer. For the last two years, we've been doing the Cycle for Survival, that raises money for Sloan Kettering, which is where my dad was treated. I feel like it's a great event and I'm always so heartened by people's generosity and support.

All Day Foundation, started by friend Caroline Strauss and the owners of Broken Shaker, does a lot in the hospitality industry leveraging their connections and raising awareness for children in need. They have lots of events at bars and places around town like a Friendsgiving event in November where you can try lots of foods from different restaurants.

Every April it's national poetry month. We partner with the O, Miami Poetry Festival because we love their exuberance, their creativity and their crazy events to expose everybody in Miami Dade to a poem. They commissioned a Miami artist, Jesse Nite, to do something at Robert is Here in the papaya field. It’s called ‘Stay Gold’. It's a huge sculpture, and it's a permanent thing. It's based on a Robert Frost poem. There's going to be activities around it throughout the year. Now when you go south you will see this big 'Stay Gold' in the field. Within the negative space of the letters you'll see the palm trees or the sunset. Another smaller project they're doing is like the little Chiquita banana stickers. They're making fruit stickers and each one has a little poem on it. They're very colorful and very cute. The poems could be a few lines from Marjorie Stoneman Douglas or from elementary students. We've been helping distribute them. I'll try to get you some. You can put them on your fruit. Go on their website omiami.org for the full list of many activities. They have more than one a day.

At Temple Beth Am, I’m involved with Baby Boomers and we just started a Havurah group with four other couples. I'm on the committee of Baby Boomers. It’s a gathering of older people and we have different events. Recently, we had an activity to learn about social media. We are planning an event for next Thursday night called Mindfulness Meditation.

I’ve been Marie Kondo'ing my life for several years now, The Lotus House is the exclusive recipient of the excess of things I no longer care to hold onto. Human Rights Watch opened a Miami Chapter recently, I highly recommend their upcoming Voices for Justice annual dinner March 14, 2019 at the New World Center in Miami Beach.
